Any car mechanics on? Question about replacing a fuel line?

My car is leaking gas only when the car is running near the gas tank. Firestone said the entire 10′ section of fuel line tubing must be replaced and they want $390 to do it.

It seems like an easy task on my 96 chevy cavalier but I don’t have the tools or anything to do it myself.

My question is this- if I find the leak, is there some temporary solution to seal it up? Like duct tape or some sealent? I asked the mechanic there and he said the worst that could happen is it doesn’t work, so it’s worth a shot since I can’t afford to fix it right now.

I just need it to work while I do an 800 mile trip in 10 days. Are there repair kits for fuel lines? Or will some tape work?

Every gas line I’ve seen in the new cars have Steel line from the tank to the throttle body\fuel rail. These fuel lines never just break or bend. It my be leaking at where the fuel filter is. Most fuel lines run on the driver side just under the car. The fuel filter is a metal canister usually just in front of the driver side rear tire.
The filter has a gasket and it can get corroded or try rotted.
If it is a small leak(small drip every min) I’d just wait till I had the time and tools. All you’ll need is some line wrenches, pliers and a flat head screw driver.
If the steel line has a pin hole in it you can apply JB Weld or Epoxy.
Is gas running down the tank or a steel line? Did you see the leak yourself and it is gas?

I do remember a 99 Gran AM I worked on that had 2ft rubber line from the pump and then the 8ft steel line to the motor.
