Ford Mustang Shift Knob
Car/Transmission Question?
I was driving at about 55 mph and I rested my hand on the shift knob, but while doing so I accidentally shifted the car into reverse. It was only in reverse for about 2-3 seconds because at first I thought I had just shifted into neutral but then I heard a screeching sound and my car started to come to an abbrupt stop almost as if I had hit the brakes,thats when I looked at the shift knob and realized it was in R so I quickly switched it back into Drive and continued to my destination. Im not sure if the screeching sound came from my tires or from under the hood. After it happened I still had to drive about 4 miles to my destination and the car didnt act up at all after it happend but I just want to know if anyone knows more about this or if it could have caused any major damage to my transmission or anything? And Im not sure if this matters or not but the car is a 2001 Ford Mustang Gt automatic.
There’s a steel finger, called a pawl, in an auto tranny. When you shift into park, this pawl drops down into the teeth of one of the gears and physically locks the tranny from turning. If the car still goes into park, then the pawl is okay, although it’s probably really pissed at you. Sounds like you got away without damage..
