Honda Gold Wing

Honda Gold Wing
can any motorcycle rider handle a 1800cc honda Gold Wing regardless of experience?

I’m afraid I’ll have to cry BS to both of the guys above. If you have the physical stature to sit on the bike and put your feet on the ground, you can handle the bike. There’s even at least one aftermarket company making retractable ‘landing gear’ for it that mounts underneath the bags. At very slow speeds and while the machine is stopped they go down so that the rider doesn’t even take their feet off the boards. Then once the bike is in motion they retract back up out of the way.

It is one of the most well balanced, well thought out and easy to ride bikes built. It is predictable, confidence inspiring and won’t do anything that will surprise you. The brake equalizer would help the novice brake more efficiently and safely, and ABS equipped one even more so.

If the rider takes the MSF riders course and feels confident, then straddles a ‘Wing and isn’t intimidated there’s no reason he/she couldn’t handle the bike.

EDIT: PCPY, please read:

The problem with your remarks about me is that I am not a Honda dealer. I couldn’t sell anyone a ‘Wing. But simply by reading your remarks concerning one I can only assume that you’ve never ridden one.

The 1800 is one of the sweetest handling, most stable and best all around bikes on the market today and a hell of a long way from an “800lb bike that handles like a wheelbarrow full of rocks at low speed.”

Your comment, “One last thing to think of and that is inertia. You get those big bikes rolling and those heavy wheels spinning and they don’t want to lean, it take quite a bit of muscle to carve corners with an 800 lb bike. The lighter you are, the more difficult it is to change directions.” I’ll take exception with as well. The vehicles weight in motion has more effect on braking than turning, and the 1800 has excellent brakes.

Turning a bike in motion is a simple matter really, not difficult at all. Ever hear of countersteering? The next time you go riding try this, going into a left turn simply give the left handlebar the slightest bit of input. The bike will lean to the left and turn with no other input. It works just as well at 15 mph as it does at 150 mph. The riders strength and physical stature has absolutely nothing to do with it. Looks like a rider and racer of your vast experiance would know about that. That technique is taught in the MSF basic riders course BTW…

But please, don’t take my word for it. Come on over to one of our local riding spots. A place in the Smokey mountains called The Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap, NC. It’s officially called US129. This piece of road has 318 turns in 11 miles. ( http://www.tailofthedragon.com/ ) There’s a guy we call Yellow Wolf that will be glad to film your run by following you on his Yellow 1800. He’s one of the best on the mountain and embarrasses loudmouths every week-end. ( http://www.yellowwolfvideos.com/ )

As for all your drivel about pebbles under your feet, ect. Good grief man. If that were as big a problem as you make it out to be none of us would be riding anything bigger than scooters and mopeds. You’d think a ‘rider’ with all your ‘experiance’ would know that.

I will say that I’ll have to agree with you that too many dealers don’t ride. But that isn’t the case here. My ‘pedigree’ is at least as good as yours and I have more racing time than you claim to have.

I’m not a ‘used car salesman’ type of business man, and unfortunately my bottom line reflects that. In fact I have refused to sell sport bikes to inexperianced & immature riders.

We donate bikes every year to the local MSF rider training people, and allow a local ATV training folks to use our property for thier classes. We’ve even ponied up some ATV’s when they were needed. We also sponsor a local hare scramble series and help local racers out with discounts on parts, accessories and bikes.

Quite simply, my staff and I love the sport, and the riders that make it what it is.

My apologies to everyone for the rant, but I felt attacked by this person and needed to get this off my chest.
