Is craigslist a safe place to buy a motorcycle?

I’m looking at motorcycles to give myself a graduation present with the money I received for graduation. I’ve ridden a 50cc scooter throughout high school and want something more, but I only have about $3000 and want quality. Is that a possible asking price? I went to a honda dealership and even them slashing the price was still too expensive, but on craigslist there are several older motorcycles for sale at prices much lower than $3000. Is it a bad idea to buy a used motorcycle? Is it worse on craigslist? Would it be a better investment to save for a new motorcycle and have guarantees and warranties?

Not a penny until you have the title IN HAND and take someone who knows bikes.

Like a mechanic.

I’ve been riding for 35 years and have never bought a new bike.
