Can I take my NJ Motorcycle Road test on a Honda Shadow 1100?
I would prefer to take my road test on my own bike instead of using a rental scooter that I will never use again. Is it possible and will it be muhc harder to do it on my Honda Shadow 1100? Also do I really need to have a licensed operator with me or can I just ride my bike to the DMV and take the test? Also I noticed they said it had to be inspected, but when I bought the bike brand new, they said I needed a license before I could get it inspected. Whats the deal?
You can take the test on any street legal motorcycle as long as it is properly registered and insured.
It is much better to take the test on your own bike than on some rented toy. We are one of the few states that allows this stupidity and it should be banned immediately.
I have taken a number of people for their road test and watched these dorks struggle to get a real bike into the DMV parking lot, pass the test on the rental scooter, and barely make it out of the lot on the real bike. One guy crashed before he got out of the lot!
One time I made a comment to the examiner about this absurdity. He agreed that it was stupid and one of the people taking the test said that the maneuvers required were impossible on his 500 pound bike. He specifically cited the confined space U turn. The examiner said that he’d seen many people do it on larger bikes but the kid wasn’t buying it so I jumped on my 850 pound Harley and did a few figure-8s in the space.
You don’t need a license to get the bike inspected. You can ride the bike to the inspection station accompanied by a licensed rider or you can have a licensed rider take it for you.
You must be accompanied by a licensed rider at all times until you get your own license.
