How would gasoline get into the oil on our 4 wheeler?

We just had our 2002 Kawasaki Prairie 650 in AGAIN for servicing. This time, there was gas in the oil. The mechanic saw nothing wrong otherwise & changed the oil & spark plugs, which has fixed the problem for now. He thinks my husband was running the choke too much, but my husband is sure he hasn’t been. The mechanic adjusted the idle downwards, but my husband thought the idle was set too low, since the thing stalls when it’s idling sometimes. My husband hadn’t adjusted the idel, however. Any other ideas? This mechanic is pretty experienced, but we have our ATV in so much, I am wondering how competent he is. We do not use this ATV hard – we do plow snow with it, but don’t go riding around on rocks and all that off trail stuff. We never have it over 30 MPH. We are the original owners.

The carburetor has a float that, when the bowl is full of gas, pushes a “needle” into an opening and shuts the gas off from coming in. If this needle is not sealing properly, it will allow gas to keep coming in and flow into the combustion chamber. Over night the gas can seep past the rings and valves into the crankcase. The solution would be to get the needle replaced.

Also, when the ATV is not in use, turn the gas off at the tank.
