The name translated from Italian literally means four doors. There have been five generations of the car, each separated by a period of roughly five years. In the early 1960s, Maseratis reputation was at a high. With growing sales, Prince Karim Aga Khan ordered a special Maserati 5000 WP, chassis no. 103,060, designed by Pietro Frua. The following year, Maserati showed the firstgeneration Quattroporte of 1963, which bore a striking resemblance to the earlier drawing. Also designed by Frua, the 1963 Tipo 107 Quattroporte joined two other notable grand tourers, the Facel Vega and the Lagonda Rapide, which could comfortably do 200 km/h (124 mph) on the new motorways of Europe. However, the Quattroporte could be said to have been the first car specifically designed for this purpose. It was equipped with a 4.1 L (4136 cc/252 in) V8 engine, producing 256 hp (SAE) (191 kW) at 5,600 rpm, and either a fivespeed ZF manual transmission or a threespeed automatic. Maserati claimed a top speed of 230 km/h (143 mph). The Biturbo was a twodoor, four seater notchback coup (of somewhat smaller dimensions than the BMW 3 Series of the time) featuring, as the name implies, a twolitre V6 engine with two turbochargers and a luxurious interior. The car was designed by Pierangelo Andreani, an engineer from the De Tomaso team, somewhat influenced by the design of the newer Quattroporte III (Italdesign Giugiaro), as can be observed on the front fascia. It substituted an all new Maserati designed quadcam V6 motor (also shared with the Citroen SM) for the Boras larger V8, resulting not only in a lower cost, but room for a small backseat and better handling due to lower weight and a better front/rear weight distribution. The first Merak was designed during the Citron ownership of Maserati (19681975). It featured a 3.0 L Maserati V6 (190 hp) engine, also used in the Citron SM. The midengine Merak used the Bora bodyshell, but with the extra space offered by the smaller engine used to carve out a second row of seats, suitable for children or very small adults. Other Citron parts used for the Merak included the SMs dramatic dashboard and the hydraulic brake system. In 1977 these parts were supplanted by more conventional units.
