How Do You Build a Good Boat for “Sink or Float” Activity?
My younger brother, in 2nd grade, is doing a “Sink or Float” activity/ competition where he must build a 6″ x 6″ boat ( basically, a structure that can float; doesn’t need to be shaped or look like one) and small tiles will be placed on it, with the boat that can hold the most being the winner. Does anyone know what kind of structure and materials would be the best to support the most ammount of weight? Some restrictions are that you can’t use pre-made materials (like a milk jug, or tupperware) and it HAS to be the 6″ x 6″ dimension, or it won’t fit in the bucket. We constructed a small raft with straws wrapped in tin foil that worked fairly well, and tried to use toilet paper roll tubes to make a “pontoon style” floatation device, but they got soggy. Any ideas are welcome. Thanks.
I’ve done this before using only foil. It would be a little more difficult since you have to make it 6″x6″, but I think it is possible. Foil is sturdy, yet lightweight and very flexible.
The winner of my class’s competition built one that was rectangle, with very high sides, that way even as the boat went down because of the weight (from the pennies that we used instead of tiles) it was not techincally sinking because it didn’t take on any water.
The hardest part will be folding/securing the corners in such a way that no water gets in. But it is possible, my whole science class proved it with 5 out of 6 models being water proof and able to hold objects.
Perhaps you could even use packing tape (really wide clear tape that is very strong) to wrap around the corners. It should keep out water, but it will add ot the weight fo the boat.
