Hurricane Proof Computer
Hurricanes cause billions of dollars in damage each year, including damage to computers. Unfortunately, computers can be much more difficult to replace if lost as other electronic devices because the data contained on their hard drives and time spent and improve overclocking. Being a Katrina evacuee and survivor, I know how a computer can be after a natural disaster. With the hurricane season that threatens the future days, I decided to write a guide to help people protect their computers and data during a natural disaster.
Part I: data backup and things that have
The hurricane season or not, should always be supported by the data. If you plan to ride out the storm (bad idea) or to evacuate to another location, you must have a backup of your data, or an external hard drive or optical media such as CD-R or DVD. Be sure to keep your data in a very safe place, like a water-proof safe. Never leave a backup of your computer.
Then you should have the following things to make life easier after the storm:
-
Telephone number of insurance companies a computer or computer parts, and phone numbers for all local access providers (including remote access and satellite). Having your phone number and phone numbers of information to your insurance company will help make your computer faster replaced if damaged. I can not stress enough how important it is for you to have the phone numbers and access to records, even for all your local ISP! After Katrina, the Internet was the only way that many people can communicate with the outside world. Destination wanted my broadband was 3 weeks and no of the other providers of broadband Internet should be the exception in new orders due to the storm, leaving me with my old friend Dial Up, I thought I had buried 8 years ago. Your best bet is to use a satellite Internet provider of services because they lack the equipment can be destroyed by a hurricane and cause an accident.
-
Backup copies of all files and all applications of game discs, CD keys, drivers and operating system disks in his hand.
-
Photos from your computer, as well as evidence of what parties to the interior.
If the Quad SLI setup destroyed, do not want your insurance company to replace it with something that is worth much less, and you? It is easy for people says "I've had this, this and this and all it cost me $ 3,000 last month. "After 3 years Athlon XP platform is destroyed. Therefore, your insurance company may be reluctant to replace expensive parts of your computer if you can prove that you own. So to what extent insurance (including flood insurance) will replace to the damaged property. While some policies will cover the cost of replacing damaged property, some may cover part of the cost of the damage. He also knows what is your deductible.
- Blog or social networking profile
Social networking sites like MySpace were high after Katrina. Friends may know where other friends had discharged simply by reading each others myspaces.
- Gas generator and
A generator can feed many things, including computers at home! Check with your local generator of any local legislation on generators, how cesse to create, and how they work with computers. Because unstable generators provide power, UPS battery backup and surge protector is a necessity. Do not count on gas to power your generator is available as a result of the storm. It is preferable to have a good supply of gas and gas containers are some gaps in his hand.
Part II: Evacuating with your PC
Like all family members or pets that may have, your PC is not something to leave behind if you can help. Although your first priority must come out alive, you should consider your PC with you if you can spare your car. You can not count on having your destination for cheap computers, high speed Internet, or leisure activities for this question. Being in another place during a hurricane is stressful. Between watching his city strikes on CNN and The Weather Channel, the people around you and you will be tense and anxious. Having a good computer to surf the Web and play Battlefield 2 is a confidence artist. In fact, the Internet was the only place where could get information about my great neighborhood after the storm! Message boards local press was full of evacuees from my area and had lots information on damage to action.
Even if you can not bring your PC, at least make your hard drive with you! If your house is ransacked in the aftermath of the storm, the last thing I want is your personal data held by another person. Make sure your hard drive is in an antistatic bag to prevent unnecessary damage to it.
If you take a long trip, you probably should be some kind of padding or foam (even a blanket will do) around your computer or hard disk to protect against vibration of the car. Do not carry your monitor if you have an LCD screen and it is space.
Part III: Departure from your PC
If you do not have room for your PC in your car, do not plan to stay with him during the storm. There are many benefits, you can take to avoid unnecessary damage to your computer:
-
Cover Open the safe parts of the computer (such as fans and vents) with tape. Do not use tape unless you want to take risk of your work paint or sticky.
-
Cover your computer with garbage bags as you want. At least 2 trash bags recommended computer.
-
See how your house is high, the risk of flooding, and other factors. If you know you could flood your home, you should upgrade your computer to the second floor. But if you know your roof is low and could fly easily, do not put on the second floor! Find an enclosed space with no windows (like a closet) as close to the center of your home as possible. If your computer case has a side window, make sure you are facing the ground or against a wall. If you can, place items in your computer other provides additional protection against heavy rain and debris.
Part IV: When the worst happens
In If your PC is damaged during the storm, do not worry. If the damage is of a fallen tree or a piece of the plane debri, there is nothing you can do. If your computer is flooded, however, There are steps to take to recover. Below is a basic guide on how to retrieve a team flooded.
-
Do not turn on the computer! Make sure you are off! Even if you're anxious to see if your computer can run, you do not know if you have been exposed to water. You just end up causing more damage if you do. Remember not to keep your computer off.
-
Remove items that work. If you can see a water line on your computer to delete all previous components and put them in a safe place.
-
Let your computer dry. Let your computer dry for a week or two. A drop of water on a computer running could spell disaster.
-
Remove the CMOS battery and elsewhere.
-
Use an alcohol solution 90% or more to wash the different components of your computer, including connectors. If necessary, use a brush to remove stubbon crud.
-
Let your computer dry completely.
If that does not work or if you have data that can not afford to lose your hard drive, consider to recover the professional team. Do not try to preserve power, the CMOS battery, hard drive, optical drives, or fans, have been flooded. Also remember take pictures of any damage to the computer before attempting to fix it for insurance purposes.
We hope this guide will help people put their computers to Hurricane-related damage. A computer is a very useful tool that should be part of any disaster supply good team. Believe me when I tell you one thing important to have around. However, remember a computer is a physical property. Like all material objects can be replaced. Man and animal life without however, can not. Use discretion when deciding whether to take the team with you and all the repair if damaged.
Disclaimer: In no case the author be liable for any action you can take to save his team from a hurricane or fix it after the flood. All actions that you choose in relation with hurricanes and computers are taken at your own risk. For the good of all, please use your good direction for a natural disaster.
