Is it possible to convert an internal hard drive to a ready usb external hard drive?
I have two extra hard drive i salvaged out of the crashed desktop and was thinking if there is a way to convert this two to be external drives for my laptop.
You can purchase an external USB drive enclosure for $20-$50 and install the old drive. As you said desktop drive get a 5.25″ drive model and be sure to get one that matches the drive type (IDE, SATA, etc).
The drive will be listed in the My Computers window as a normal drive letter. You may need to format the disk depending on it condition and previous use.
I have a external 2″ (laptop disk) enclosure that I use with a set of old 10G laptop drives. I store old files and backup on them, then put the bare drive in a firesafe. Total cost to me was $19, the drives were all recovered from dead systems.
