How do Mexicans defend themselves?

If you can’t have a gun in Mexico, nor the car flamethrowers that people in South Africa have, how do you keep from getting carjacked?

Do you just know which streets not to drive on, or areas where you shouldn’t go?

Miami’s dangerous, but at least by law I can carry an uzi in my glove box (semi-automatic). You can legally carry a gun under your clothes in Detroit or New Orleans with a permit. It just seems like if the police and social legislators can’t provide protection and crime prevention like they do in Western Europe (where you don’t need a gun), then at least they should let you defend yourself. Even in Canada I can have a shotgun in my trunk, not that I would ever feel as though I’d have to use it for self-defence.
Have you ever been to Tijuana?

All you have to do now in these days is cough or sneeze in the carjackers face with the deadly Mexican swine flu (H1N1).

Just Joking.
