Is this oil ok for my car?

I need to top up a VW Golf 2005 Mk5 Diesel. However, I’m not exactly sure which engine is in it as I know there are a few variations. I can’t use the registration checker feature anywhere to check the engine size as it’s on an Isle of Man Reg. I’m pretty certain it’s a naturally aspirated 2.0L (On the engine cover it says SDI) Where as, as far as i’m aware, if it’s a TDI (which are the only other models in the owners manual for this year) they plaster it all over the place and it’s also very slow. I’ve had a look in the owners manual which covers all the Mk5 models and it suggests “High-lubricity multigrade oil” or VW50300 which is useless to me! So from checking what model and details I have, I’ve narrowed it down to Castrol Magnatec 5W-30A1 Fully synthetic oil. Can someone please advise if this is ok to use? It’s only to top up but want to make sure it’s right.

That is probably fine for topping up, the only reason I would be wary is that mixing brands *could* cause oil to burn faster. This is less likely to happen these days, but the problem hasn’t completely gone away. If I were you, the next time you get an oil change, get a quart or two extra of the oil so you can top off between changes with same-brand oil. Also, don’t second guess the engineers who designed the car around 5w30 oil. Put your trust in the mechanical and lubrication engineers, not lube techs.
