my jet ski will not start please help?

i was ridin my jet ski today (98 yamaha waverunner) and i was going over some waves and the key fell out, the jet ski died so i wait a minute and put they key back in and try to start it but it wont start, the motor wont even turn over. the screen goes blank when i hit the start button. what could this be? i checked the battery cables and everything and all is good. please help

Sounds like there is damage to the key switch itself as a key is generally locked in place when the ignition is on run position. If you inserted ignition key wet there may be moisture in key switch. A possible cure may be squirting lock deicer in key switch with battery disconnected.
I would get the switch checked out and also tell service personnel if you had reinserted key in ignition while wet as the moisture may be shorting ignition system.

And out of curiosity, is it the emergency off dead man switch that was pulled off? If so it worked as intended. reinsert part properly going through the whole rigamaroe set forth in your owners manual.
(may be a reset switch somewhere or maybe you just partially reinserted switch.)
